New spot tests for thallium(I), bismuth(III), and iodide

  • Published:
Microchimica Acta Aims and scope Submit manuscript

Summary

New spot tests are described for the selective detection of Tl(I), Bi(III), and I ions, with limits of detection 4 μg, 5 μg, and 15 μg respectively, and limits of dilution 1∶12500, 1∶10000, and 1∶3300 respectively. Tests are also described for the direct detection of Tl(I) in the presence of Bi(III), and for Bi(III) in the presence of I. These tests are based on the formation of a red or red-orange precipitate of “thallium bismuth iodide”. Most cations and anions, as well as thiourea, hydrazine, and hydrogen peroxide do not interfere. Only Ag(I), Pd(II), Pt(IV), NO2 , IO3 , IO4 , MnO4 , S2O3 2− and EDTA interfere.
