The extraction of uranium (IV) from sulphuric acid by tri-octylamine in benzene

Summary

The extraction of U(IV) from aqueous sulphuric acid media by TOA in benzene has been studied as a function of the sulphuric acid concentration and the concentration of TOA in the organic phase. The extraction may be represented by an equation such as H2U(SO4)3+(R3NH)2SO4=(R3NH)2U(SO4)3+H2SO4 The results for extraction from mixtures of U(VI) and U(IV) suggest that U(VI) forms a much more stable complex with TOA. Osmometric measurements on solutions of the U(IV)-complex in the organic phase indicate a tendency of this complex to aggregate.

Zusammenfassung

Die Extraktion von U(IV) aus Schwefelsäure wurde in Abhängigkeit von der Säurekonzentration sowie der Trioktylamin-Konzentration untersucht. Die dabei ablaufende Reaktion läßt sich wie folgt formulieren: H2U(SO4)3+(R3NH)2SO4=(R3NH)2U(SO4)3+H2SO4 Die Ergebnisse der Extraktion aus Mischungen von U(IV) und U(VI) zeigen, daß U(VI) mit TOA einen stabileren Komplex bildet. Die osmometrischen Messungen in U(IV)-Komplex-Lösungen lassen eine Assoziation des Komplexes annehmen.
