Effects of tetrabenazine on lordosis behaviour and on brain monoamines in the female rat

Summary

The time course of action of tetrabenazine (TBZ), 2 and 10 mg/kg i.p., on lordosis behaviour and on brain monoamines in ovariectomized estrogen pretreated female rats, was studied. The administration of TBZ (2 mg/kg) produced a decrease in brain DA and an increase in the number of lordosis, whereas 10 mg/kg of TBZ resulted in the same increase in lordosis behaviour as 2 mg/kg and a significant decrease in NA, DA and 5-HT. The results suggest that a decrease in brain monoamine levels, especially DA, facilitates lordosis behaviour in estrogen-TBZ treated female rats.
