Summary
Net sodium fluxes into thin bean-leaf sections were 65 times higher than fluxes into enzymatically isolated cells. Isolated mesophyll cells did not stain with neutral red, the dye was, however, accumulated by similar cells in small pieces of tissue which had not been separated by the enzymatic treatment. It is concluded that the plasmatic membranes of isolated bean-leaf cells are damaged and, hence, unfit for studies of ion. uptake.
