Summary

The birefrigence of protoplast during mitosis in staminal hair cells ofTradescantia virginica was investigatedin vivo. The following results were obtained:

Under given conditions, no birefringence could be observed in the “clear zone“ (prophase), the chromosome fibers of the spindle, and the chromosomes themselves.

The phragmoplast exhibits relatively strong birefringence during the early telophase.

The continuous fibers of the spindle are clearly visiblein vivo. These form a portion of the phragmoplast.

Neither cell plate nor middle lamella shows any birefringence. The primary wall exhibits birefringence which increases rapidly during the later stages of telophase.
