Summary
The preparation of an antiserum to a purified suspension of adenovirus type 5 hexons is described. The antiserum reacts by complement fixation tests with type 5 and with many other adenoviruses.
The anti-hexon serum can be used for the immunofluorescent detection of the site of hexon synthesis within tissue culture cells infected with many different adenoviruses, and therefore allows diagnostic detection of the adenovirus group antigen. In experimentally infected cultures, “group” identification could be made within 24 hours of infection when many different adenoviruses were tested.
