Multiplication of herpes virus in a mouse mammary tumor

Summary

Experimental herpes virus infection of spontaneous mouse mammary tumors was studied with the aid of virological and morphological techniques.

Electron micrography of uninoculated tumors showed the presence in a fair proportion of the epithelial cells of cytoplasmic particles identical with those of theBittner agent.

Titration of the virus content of tumors inoculated with small amounts of herpes virus showed that a considerable multiplication of the virus had occurred by the eighth day after inoculation. Later, the virus content of the tumor tissue decreased. As a morphological evidence of virus multiplication, intranuclear particles appeared, identical with those described by others in herpes virus infected cells.

Since the two types of particles — those of the tumor agent and the herpes virus — easily distinguishable morphologically, practically never were found simultaneously in the same cell, it was concluded that the stage of development of the tumor cells, characterized by appearance of viruslike particles, does not offer favourable conditions for multiplication of herpes virus.
