Summary

Evaluation of the diagnostic reliability of emergency peritoneoscopy in 248 cases. In 142 blunt abdominal traumas free blood was observed and confirmed by operation in 69 cases. In 53 cases free blood was absent (later confirmed). Miscellanous findings were reported in 19 cases, in 1 case the finding was false negative.

In 106 cases of suspected peritonitis there were no positive findings in 39 cases. Peritonitis was reported and later confirmed in 24 cases, carcinosis in 11 cases and bleedings in 8 cases. Two findings were false negative.

Emergency peritoneoscopy can not detect a mesenterial infarction in the early state, and is of limited value in cases of acute pancreatitis.
