Summary
The effect of denervation of the sinus caroticus and of the arcus aortae (de-afferentation) on autonomic phenomena in dogs at rest and on autonomic reactions at inborn and acquired reflexes was investigated in a sound-proof thermo-stable box with three dogs in 228 experiments. The values in the second, third and thirteenth month after deafferentation were compared with values of the period prior to deafferentation.
Deafferentation:
-
1.
Accelerates the pulse in dogs at rest in the second, third and thirteenth month after deafferentation. In standardised investigations in the same environment, the pulse of the animals after deafferentation may be accelerated without increase in the standard deviation of the pulse values; the standard deviations of the pulse values are increased only then, when the pulse at rest is more pronouncedly accelerated.
-
2.
Elevates the blood pressure in dogs at rest, in the second and third month after operation. Deafferentation increases diastolic blood pressure of the animals more than systolic blood pressure. In the standardised investigations of blood pressure in the same environment, the blood pressure after deafferentation may be elevated without increase of the standard deviation of the blood pressure values; the standard deviations are increased only then, when the blood pressure is more markedly elevated. Thirteen months after deafferentation the blood pressure is elevated only in one dog, in the second dog it is unchanged and in the third dog it is lowered, although the pulse of all dogs at rest is still significantly accelerated in this period.
-
3.
Does not change the respiration of the dogs at rest in a definite manner and rather labilises it.
-
4.
Decreases all the autonomic reactions investigated in this work (acceleration of respiration, incidence and duration of blood pressure rise, and salivation) of the dogs in food intake.
-
5.
Also decreases conditioned salivation and causes a tendency towards a decrease of all the other investigated reactions in the conditioned alimentary reflex.
-
6.
Interferes with the differential inhibition of the reaction of respiration, of pulse, and blood pressure rise, but not that of salivation.
