Reactions of the formate ion

Summary

Formate can be qualitatively detected, with very few interferences, by means of its reaction with mercuric chloride. The mercurous chloride produced is identified by its reaction with ammonia.

Zusammenfassung

Formiat läßt sich abgesehen von nur wenigen Ausnahmefällen mit Quecksilber(II)-chlorid qualitativ feststellen. Das dabei entstehende Quecksilber(I)-chlorid ist an seiner Reaktion mit Ammoniak zu erkennen.
