Summary
A method for the microdetermination of alkoxyl groups named the “Combustion Method” is described, by which the determination of alkoxyl groups and their characterisation can be carried out simultaneously. In this method, alkyl iodide formed by hydrolysis of the sample with hydriodic acid is distilled into a combustion tube and burned with a platinum contact in an air stream. Iodine and carbon dioxide are formed quantitatively; the former is absorbed by a silver gauze and the latter by a carbon dioxide absorption tube filled with soda asbestos, and both are weighed. From the weight of the iodine, the content of alkoxyl is calculated. From the molecular ratio between the carbon dioxide and the iodine found, the alkoxyl groups are characterised.
The method is very simple and precise. A large number of analyses may readily be carried out in a day. The method also can be used for the simple detection of alkoxyl groups.
