Summary
A spectrophotometric method is described for the determination of aluminium in minerals. The majority of interfering elements are removed by extraction with a chloroform solution of 8-hydroxyquinaldine atPh 10, prior to extraction and photometric estimation of aluminium with 8-hydroxyquinoline in chloroform atPh 4.5. Titanium, zirconium and uranium are not completely removed by this process. Titanium can be completely extracted with 8-hydroxyquinaldine atph 4. The extraction of zirconium by 8-hydroxyquinoline is prevented by complexing it with quinalizarin-3-sulphonic acid. Uranium is removed as its anionic acetate complex using an anion exchange resin. Satisfactory recoveries of 50μg of aluminium were obtained in the presence of at least four times this weight of Be, Bi, Cd, Ce, Co, Cr, Cu, Dy, Fe, Ga, Mo, Ni, Pb, Ti, U, V, W, Y, Zn, Zr.
