Summary

Colorimetric methods have been developed for the simultaneous determination of iron(II) and copper(II), or iron(II) and cadmium(II), using 2,2'-dipyridyl-2-pyrimidyl hydrazone (DPPmH) at pH 9.0 in 40% ethanol-water medium. The concentrations of iron(II) and copper(II) in the mixture are determined from the equations:

$$[Fe] \times 10^5 = 8.333 \times A_{580} - 0.024 \times A_{430}$$

and

$$[Cu] \times 10^5 = 2.381 \times A_{480} - 0.015 \times A_{580} .$$

Similarly, iron(II) and cadmium(II) can be evaluated using the relations:

$$[Fe] \times 10^5 = 8.33 \times A_{580} - 0.010 \times A_{440}$$

and

$$[Cd] \times 10^5 = 2.083 \times A_{440} - 0.014 \times A_{580} .$$

The proposed methods are simple, rapid, and applicable at trace levels.
