Determination of shear moduli of orthotropic materials from torsion tests

Polymer Mechanics Aims and scope

Abstract

A description is given of a method for determining the three shear moduli of orthotropic materials by testing specimens of three types in torsion. Specimens of the first and second types have flat rectangular cross sections; the cross section of specimens of the third type is circular. The longitudinal axes of the rectangular specimens coincide with one of the principal directions of elasticity of the material, the longitudinal axis of the third specimen with the other principal direction, perpendicular to the first. It is proposed to solve the system of nonlinear equations obtained by the method of successive approximations. The proposed method is illustrated with reference to an orthotropic material, DSP-B resin-indurated plywood.
