Summary
A vapour collect method is described in which the measurement of the number and kind of collected particles is based on the ability of Auger spectroscopy to measure both the thickness and composition of the collected layer. The small area needed for Auger analysis allows an experimental arrangement in which, due to the evaporating surface, the effect of heating of the collector was found to be negligible for the investigations involved in this work. An in situ Auger analysis of the evaporating surface makes it possible to investigate the effect of surface composition on evaporation phenomena. Investigations on the thermal evaporation of nickel, the diffusion of magnesium in nickel and the reaction of an oxide cathode layer with hydrogen at temperatures between 1030 K and 1300 K show the potentialities of this method.
