Summary
A study has been made of the kinetics of catechol oxidation by hydrogen peroxide, catalysed by cobalt(II). The results obtained lead to the conclusion that the reaction can proceed by two mechanisms-one involving formation of a ternary complex between hydrogen peroxide, cobalt and catechol, and the other involving the formation of OH radicals. On the basis of the investigations, a simple and highly sensitive method for cobalt determination has been developed, which will detect as little as 0.075 ng of cobalt in 0.20 ml of sample.
Zusammenfassung
Die Kinetik der durch Kobalt(II) katalysierten Oxydation von Brenzcatechin durch Wasserstoffperoxid wurde untersucht. Dabei ergab sich, daß diese Reaktion auf zwei Wegen verlaufen kann: einerseits unter Bildung eines ternären Komplexes aus Wasserstoffperoxid, Kobalt und Brenzcatechin, andrerseits unter Bildung freier OH-Radikale. Auf der Grundlage dieser Untersuchungen wurde eine einfache und sehr empfindliche Methode zur Kobalt-Bestimmung ausgearbeitet, mit der bis zu 0,075 ng Kobalt in 0,20 ml Probe nachgewiesen werden können.
