1.
Spontaneous and evoked activity in response to photic, acoustic and electrodermal stimulation and to injection of isotonic glucose solution was studied in 97 neurons of the ventromedial nucleus and lateral area of the rabbit hypothalamus. Two types of response to glucose were observed: low-threshold, phasic and high-threshold, tonic. Against the background of the second type of response, reactivity to the sensory stimuli was increased.

2.
The low-threshold, short-latency phasic response was used as unconditional response in the conditioning procedure. All glucoreceptors exhibited plastic changes in activity evoked by pairing acoustic stimulation with intracarotid injections of glucose. The course of temporary connection formation was determined by the degree of initial reactivity to the conditional stimulus and was independent of either the level of spontaneous unit activity or the sign of the response to glucose.
-
3.
Plastic changes in hypothalamic glucoreceptor activity during temporary connection formation are not the result of sensitization but are truly associative.
