Electron-microscopic investigation of pathologic inclusions in neuron mitochondria during retrograde degeneration

Abstract

Neurons of the lateral geniculate body were investigated from 1 to 24 days after destruction of the visual cortex. Membranous inclusions were found in a few mitochondria of the pathological neurons, and some mitochondria were swollen. Membranous inclusions often resembling myelin, in the mitochondria indicate that these organelles are affected in retrograde neuronal degeneration.
