Interaction of calcium and somatostatin in the control of prolactin and somatotropin release from a primary culture of rat adenohypophyseal cells

Conclusions

  1. 1.

Lowering the extracellular Ca2+ concentration from 1.8 mM to 0.1 mM inhibited prolactin secretion but did not affect STH secretion in a culture of rat adenohypophyseal cells. Increasing extracellular Ca2+ to 5 mM had no effect on prolactin secretion but diminished somewhat STH release.

  2. 2.

Somatostatin showed dose-related inhibition of STH and prolactin secretion in media with normal (1.8 mM) or low (0.1 mM) Ca2+ concentrations. Raising the Ca2+ concentration to 5 mM blocked the inhibitory effects of somatostatin on the release of these hormones.
