Polymerization and copolymerization of N-vinyl- compounds

Communcation 1. Copolymerization of 3-vinylcapbazole with vinyl esters

Bulletin of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, Division of chemical science Aims and scope

Summary

  1. 1.

Previously undescribed copolymers of 9-vinylcarbazole and vinyl esters of organic acids (formic, acetle, propionic, and butylid were prepared by the method of mass copolymerization.

  2. 2.

It was shown that for identical reaction conditions the rate of copolymerization of a vinyl ester falls as the chain lenght of its acid residue increases.

  3. 3.

Copolymerization constants were determined for the reactions of vinyl formate, vinyl acetate, vinyl prosphate, and vinyl butyrate with 9-vinylcarbazole. The differential and integral compositions of copolymers formed by 9-vinylcarbazole with vinyl acetate were calculated.

  4. 4.

The considerable different found between the copolymerization constants r1 and r2 indicates that the copolymers must vary greatly in composition during the course of the process. In this case the calculation of integral and differential composition diagrams makes it possible to select conditions (original proportions of components, degree of conversion) under which copolymers may be prepared that are more uniform is composition.
