Mechanical properties of alloys of the magnesium — cadmium system

Summary

  1. 1.

Mechanical properties of alloys of the magnesium-cadmium system in the annealed and quenched conditions have been measured at ordinary and at high temperature for the first time.

  2. 2.

By the method of mechanical tests on annealed alloys, it has been confirmed that the compounds Mg3Cd, MgCd and MgCd3 are present in the magnesium-cadmium system at room temperature.

  3. 3.

Temperature for the mechanical properties at 280 and 350°, and also the curve for alloys quenched from these temperature, give no indication of the presence of the compound MgCd. It has therefore been shown that the compound MgCd is formed not from the melt, but from the solid solution, i.e., it is a typical Kurnskov compound.

  4. 4.

The compounds Mg3Cd, MgCd and MgCd3 form considerable solid-solution regions and are distinguished by their high plasticity and low hardness, compared with the solid solution from which they are formed.
