Summary
-
1.
The absence of steric hindrance to polymerization in diphenylenethylene is explained on the basis of the compact arrangement of the phenyl groups in the molecule.
-
2.
Stereochemical models of diphenylethylene and 1,1-diphenylethylene are examined and an explanation is given for the different behavior of these compounds in the polymerization reaction.
