Primary radical formation in the vapor-phase nitration of alkanes with nitrogen dioxide

Summary

It is shown with the aid of thermodynamic calculations that it is very unlikely that free radicals will be formed by reaction of nitrogen dioxide with alkanes in accordance with the equation RH +NO2 → R + HNO2.
