Abstract
Crystals of (C5H5NH)SbI4 are orthorhombic, space group Pbca, witha=25.156(6),b=13.960(2),c=7.838(1) Å. Least-squares refinement on the basis of 607 observed reflections gave a final residual index of 0.039. The structure is composed of SbI −4 ions which form infinite chains through the crystal via iodide linkages. Each antimony lies in a distorted octahedral environment; all I-Sb-I angles are close to 90°. Similar linkages forming infinite chains had previously been found for the chloro and bromo analogues. However the asymmetry associated with the bridge appears to decrease as the size of the halogen increases.
