Interhemispheric functional relations during conditioning in man

Conclusions

  1. 1.

    During the formation of a temporary connection between a nonverbal visual stimulus and an emotionally meaningful word interhemispheric functional relations are significantly altered.

  2. 2.

    The conditioned stimulus evokes local activation chiefly in the visual cortex of the left hemisphere, as a result of which interhemispheric relations in the latent period of the evoked cortical response are reversed.

  3. 3.

    Temporary connection formation is not reflected in the amplitude-time parameters of the evoked response to the conditioned stimulus in the association area.

  4. 4.

    Extinction of the temporary connection and, consequently, restoration of interhemispheric functional relations such as were observed before conditioning, take place slowly, after 100–150 presentations of the stimulus without reinforcement.
