Leon Garfield's first children's book was published as recently as 1964. His second bookDevil in the Fog published two years later won the Guardian Award for Children's Fiction and in 1969 he received an Arts Council Award for the best children's books of the previous three years. An art student until war broke out, he is now a hospital biochemist. He lives with his wife and daughter in north London.
