Summary
-
1.
The potentiation of mono-, di- and polysynaptic reticulospinal and vestibulospinal synaptic influences was studied in experiments on cats by intracellular recording of EPSPs and IPSPs of lumbar motoneurons and recording surface potentials from the spinal cord.
-
2.
During paired stimulation, potentiation of short-latency EPSPs develops mainly from an increase in amplitude of the disynaptic PSP. This is shown by the magnitude of the corresponding segmental delay, the increase in the second component of the surface potential, the presence of heterosynaptic potentiation, and the sensitivity of the potentiated PSPs to nembutal and mephenesin.
-
3.
Post-tetanic potentiation may be stronger in the case of polysynaptic EPSPs.
-
4.
The question of the functional significance of the differences observed between potentiation of mono- and polysynaptic PSPs of suprasegmental origin is discussed.
