Abstract

The concept of a therapeutic milieu is central to numerous theories of institutional treatment of youth. Yet, the therapeutic milieu is evasive and frequently difficult to conceptualize. The constructs of social climate, therapeutic discipline, and the Social Order are discussed as components of an integrated strategy for institutional program development. The implications of this approach call for the therapeutic milieu to become the hallmark measure of the quality of care provided to institutionalized youth.
