Summary
-
1.
It has been established that polymerization of vinylsuccinimide in aqueous solution in the presence of potassium persulfate can yield polymers of high molecular weight.and soluble in readily available solvents; chloroform, methylene chloride, dichloroethane, dioxan, pyridine, etc. Formalin and urea are suitable as additives for suppressing the branching and cross-linking of the polymeric chains.

2.
Polymerization of vinylsuccinimide in aqueous solution is strongly inhibited by atmospheric oxygen, especially below 70°.
