Abstract
We study the thermodynamic limit of the ground states of VBS models on a Cayley tree. We prove uniqueness for coordination numbersz ⩽ 4 and the occurrence of Néel order forz ⩾ 5. Our main technical tool is a transfer matrix description of VBS states.
