Abstract

The author examines a singular solution of the system of equations for the steady axisymmetric self-similar motions of a viscous incompressible fluid at large Reynolds numbers. This solution qualitatively describes the behavior of a whirlwind and other similar natural phenomena where the swirling of the flow and the viscosity are the most characteristic properties. It is shown that the solution not only gives a good description of the observed properties of whirlwinds but also makes it possible to explain the mechanism of kinetic energy concentration in this threatening natural phenomenon.
