Abstract
AChrysosphaerella species with characteristics of bothC. longispina Lauterborn emend.Korshikov andC. multispina Bradley was found to be common in several lakes in Ontario, Canada. Observations of scale and spine structure with both optical and transmission electron microscopes strongly suggest thatC. longispina andC. multispina are conspecific. Emended descriptions of the genusChrysosphaerella and of its type speciesC. longispina are given. A revised key to genera in theSynuraceae has been constructed which makes the recently proposed subgenusPseudochrysosphaerella Preisig & Tak. redundant and also provides for the distinction betweenChrysosphaerella and the related genusSpiniferomonas based on the morphology of their siliceous spines.
