Relation of the gas chromatographic retention indexes of isomeric alkylcyclohexenoate esters to their structure and conformation

Conclusions

  1. 1.

    Retention indexes have been determined for 29 methyl esters of alkyl-substituted cyclohexanoic and cyclohexenoic acids on capillary columns with polar stationary phases.

  2. 2.

    The cyclohexenoate and cyclohexanoate esters with methyl substituents at position 2 may exist in a stable conformation with an axial carbomethoxy group; this permits gas chromatography to be used to ascertain the stable conformations of cyclohexane and cyclohexene derivatives.
