Conclusions
-
1.
Criteria have been formulated for the suitability of modified electrodes in systems for the photoseparation of charges.
-
2.
By means of cyclic current-voltage curves, a study has been made of the characteristics of modified electrodes coated with films of polyxylideneviologen-polysulfostyrene and with liquid films of octadecylviologen-decanol. It has been shown that the mechanical method of depositing polymer films, if the required coverage of the electrode is obtained, gives films that are too thick, characterized by a “charge diffusion” time that is 3–4 orders of magnitude greater than that required for use of the modified electrode in separating charges in systems for the photodecomposition of water.
-
3.
A route has been mapped out for the improvement of modified electrodes for use in photoelectrochemical cells for the decomposition of water.
