Abstract

A general structure for discrete, multistage chemical processes is formulated so that a large class of possible process structures result from the variation of a finite set of structure variables. First-order criteria for stationary extrema with respect to these structure variables are derived. It is shown that the dimension of optimal structure problems can be reduced significantly.
