Additional information
This study was part of a larger research project on individual and social concomitants of suicidal behavior supported by the Volkswagen Trust (Grant No. 2/36665), some results of which (not related to the topic covered in this paper) have already been published elsewhere (Häfner, Welz, Gorenc, & Kleff, 1983; Welz, 1984; Welz & Häfner, 1984). A preliminary and much reduced analysis of the data reported on here was included in a paper presented at the 8th Symposium of the Epidemiology and Community Psychiatry Section of the World Psychiatric Association, which has been published in the proceedings of this conference (Veiel, 1987a). The authors thank three anonymous reviewers for their helpful comments.
