Conclusions

  1. 1.

1,1-Diaryl-substituted olefins and alcohols containing a β chlorine or bromine atom are reduced by triethylsilane in CF3COOH to 1,1-Diaryl-2-haloethanes. Mercury-containing compounds are demercurated under these conditions.

  2. 2.

Theβ- substituted 1,1-diarylethyl cations formed as intermediates under the conditions of ionic hydrogenation display a pronounced carbonium character.
