Conclusions
-
1.
Although each of the bisspiropyrans studied undergoes single-ring opening under the action of light, sequential two-quantum absorption does not occur here.
-
2.
The formation of relatively long-lived colored forms of these bisspiropyrans in toluene solution proceeds through short-lived isomers.
-
3.
The chromophore interaction is much stronger in the photoinduced B-B form of compound (VIII) (6′-nitrobisspiropyran) than in the other bisspyrans.
