Conclusions

  1. 1.

Sylvan, methyltetrahydrofuran, methyl propyl ketone, and 2-pentanol adsorb on SiO2, forming H bonds with the OH groups of the Aerosil surface.

  2. 2.

The effect of CO on the spectra of the oxygen-containing compounds is such as to suggest that the adsorption of methyltetrahydrofuran, methyl propyl ketone, and 1-pentanol on Pt/Aerosil proceeds through a donor-acceptor mechanism involving the unshared oxygen electron pair and the free Orbitals of the metals.

  3. 3.

Methyltetrahydrofuran adsorbed on Pt/Aerosil can decompose either to ketone or aldehyde, the latter decarbonylizing without passing into the gaseous phase. The CO resulting from decarbonylation displaces the methyltetrahydrofuran from those portions of the surface which are associated with ketone formation. In the presence of H2, methyltetrahydrofuran breaks down into ketone and aldehyde, 1-pentanol and 2-pentanol appearing as the respective intermediates.
