Mechanism of the reaction of platinum with oxygen at temperatures up to 300‡

  • Published:
Bulletin of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, Division of chemical science Aims and scope

Summary

  1. 1.

The products from the reaction of platinum with oxygen at moderate temperatures are various platinum peroxides.

  2. 2.

Even on a pure platinum surface, oxygen is chemisorbed without decomposition of the molecules to atoms.

  3. 3.

In the formation of a peroxide film there are considerable changes in the structure of the surface of the metal itself, which shows, in particular, in a change in the orientation of its crystals.
