Catalytic cyclization of n-octane with formation of cyclopentane homologs

Bulletin of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, Division of chemical science Aims and scope

Summary

  1. 1.

It was shown that n-octane is cyclized with formation of propylcyclopentane and trans-1-ethyl-2-methylcyclopentane in almost equal amounts. In the case of n-octane reaction is only one-quarter to one-sixth as fast as in the case of its isomer 2,2,4-trimethylpentane.

  2. 2.

Results were obtained which suggested that cyclopentane homologs can also undergo cyclization with formation of a five-membered ring (octahydropentalene derivatives).

  3. 3.

Very pure preparations of stereoisomeric 1-ethyl-2-methylcyclopentanes were synthesized, and their Raman spectra were determined.
