Summary

  1. 1.

Structural changes in porous glasses obtained from low-alkali sodium borosilicate glasses are found to be directly related to structural changes in the original glass, which depend on composition and heat treatment.

  2. 2.

The structural transformations occurring in sodium borosilicate glasses consist in the formation of polar [B(O2)4 Na+ groups, the association of these into borate complexes, changes in the number and dimensions of the complexes, the character of their distribution in the glass and the connections between them.

  3. 3.

Many of the properties of sodium borosilicate glasses, and the complex nature of the dependence of these on the composition and heat treatment of the glass, are directly or indirectly related to these structural changes.
