Abstract
The conditions of silica gel preparation can be varied to improve its properties and produce it more cheaply.
A method of preparing silica gel has been developed, and the most significant parameters governing particle size and internal structure of the product identified, namely concentration of the solutions, pH of precipitation and temperature of drying. Composition and structure were studied by electron microscopy, thermal analysis and infra-red spectroscopy. The investigations show the silica gel produced to be medium porous, with a surface rich in silanol groups which account for its high adsorption capacity. This silica gel possesses all the properties necessary for its successful application in chromatography.
