Summary
-
1.
At atmospheric pressure the reaction of vinyl acetate with tetrachloroethylene in presence of azodiisobutyronitrile at 65° is a telomerization reaction. When the reaction is carried out under a pressure of 4000 kg/sq. cm, the average number of tetrachloroethylene units in the molecules of the solid reaction products is two, which indicates that a copolymerization process is also occurring.

The relations found for the effect of pressure on the reaction studied are explained in terms of concepts of the theory of the transition state.
