Bulletin of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, Division of chemical science Aims and scope

Summary

  1. 1.

We have studied metallochemical properties of niobium with elements of the periodic table; as a result, the elements have been classified in four families: the first family comprises elements forming a continuous series of solid solutions with niobium (β-Ti, β-Zr, V, Ta, Pd, Mo, W, U → 8 metals); the second family comprises elements forming limited solid solutions with niobium (Be, Sc, Y, La, Ac, Hf, Th, Cr, Mn, Tc, Re, Fe, Ru, Os, Co, Rh, Ir, Ni, Pd, Pt, Cu, Ag, Au, Zn, Cd, Hg, B, Al, Ga, In, Tl, C, Si, Ge, Sn, Pb, N, P, As, Sb, Bi); the third family comprises elements forming ionic compounds with niobium (S, Se, Te, Po, F, Cl, Br, I, At); the fourth family contains elements which do not react with niobium (Li, Na, K, Pb, Cs, Fr, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, Ra), and the inert gases (He, Ne, A, Kr, Xe, Rn).

  2. 2.

From the general character of reaction between niobium and other elements the basic types of phase diagrams are given for niobium with the most important elements, belonging to the I and II families.
