Effect of x rays and γ rays from a CO60 source on certain thermal properties of solid solutions of a KCl-KBr system

Abstract

Irradiation of crystals results in the occurrence of a large number of defects in their structures. Irradiation by high-energy heavy particles causes the displacement of ions from crystal lattice sites as a result of elastic collisions of the latter with the accelerated particles, as well as a result of ionization effects. What kind of mechanism is responsible for the displacement of ions during the irradiation of alkali-halide crystals by x rays and γ rays has not been established. Possible explanations of this mechanism have been proposed by Seitz [1], Varley [2], et al. [3, 4, 5].
