Abstract
The instability of the long-range positional order in smectic A and C liquid crystals under thermal fluctuations is discussed, along with the nematic-smectic A phase transition. The correlation function of the density fluctuations is calculated. It is shown that the long-range orientational order of a layered structure is stable.
