An investigation was made of the polymerization in presence of NaOH or organosiloxane oligomers of various chemical compositions prepared by different methods. The rate of polymerization of oligomers prepared by hydrolytic polycondensation is higher than that of oligomers of similar composition prepared by double decomposition, which appears to be the result of differences in the strains of the organosiloxane rings entering into the structure of the chains of their molecules.

Bulky silicon-attached groups create steric hindrance to the attack of silicon atoms in the siloxane chain by the active center, and this reduces the rate of polymerization.
