Strength of boroaluminum — A composite containing brittle fiber

  • Published:
Polymer Mechanics Aims and scope

Abstract

An examination is made of the model of destruction in a composite of the metal-brittlefiber type. It is shown that with low percentages of reinforcement localization occurs of the various ruptures in the fibers; with sufficiently large volume proportions of reinforcement the crack, developing as a consequence of the rupture of the primary weak fiber, rapidly spreads over the entire section. The experimental proof was made on boroaluminum containing fiber with different strengths and coefficients of strength variation.
