Abstract
The rate of growth of macroscopic ductile cracks in homogeneous and inhomogeneous materials has been calculated. Within the limits of the accepted model a crack grows by absorbing microfractures developed by the rmofluctuation near its top, and the merging of microfractures preceeds their absorption by the macrofracture. The relationship of growth rate with crack length, temperature, and stress agrees with the experimental results obtained for a number of polymer materials.
